The New York Jets were not expecting quarterback Aaron Rodgers to go down just four offensive snaps into the 2023 season with a torn Achilles tendon and did not have a backup plan in place. However, it seems like the team is ready to address that glaring need with Rodgers returning for the 2024 season.
According to Bookies.com, the New York Jets are among the favorites to acquire Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Below is a chart of the odds for his next team.
Falcons: +250
Steelers: +300
Bears: +450
Raiders: +750
Jets: +1200
Seahawks: +1400
Patriots: +1500
Commanders: +2000
This would be an interesting fit as Fields has a completely different style of play than Rodgers and the New York Jets coaching staff reportedly didn’t have a way to change their system when Zach Wilson took over. However, it is expected with the 2023 season happening, the team is getting prepared with a backup quarterback.
Who would be the best backup quarterback for the New York Jets?
While Justin Fields would provide a different type of quarterback, he would cost some draft capital and the Jets already do not have their second-round pick from the Rodgers trade. There are three different quarterbacks that seem to be a better fit for the New York Jets and two are currently on NFL rosters at this moment.
The first one would be a free agent as they could sign Gardner Minshew III after almost leading the Indianapolis Colts to the playoffs once Anthony Richardson went down with a season-ending injury. It would not cost too much as Minshew had a salary of $3.5 million last season and no one would be clamoring for him to start over Rodgers at any point next season.
The one player who is still on a roster but expected to be released is Russell Wilson. This could happen as Wilson would be a veteran minimum and would be able to take over once Aaron Rodgers retires. The final would be a trade with the New Orleans Saints for Jameis Winston. He has a huge arm and could be a great quarterback despite not playing much lately.
Winston is in the final year of his deal and has a salary of $1.21 million for 2024. At 30 years old, he could learn the offense and take over for the next decade once Rodgers is gone.
