Baylor Bears Secretly Eyeing Auburn’s QB Payton Thorne with Highest Bid Ever but Why Did he refuse?

The Baylor Bears were reportedly making an aggressive push for Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne, offering what insiders say was their highest-ever NIL bid in an attempt to lure him to Waco. However, despite the massive financial offer and the potential to be the face of Baylor’s offense, Thorne ultimately refused. The question remains—why did he turn down such a lucrative opportunity?

    Baylor’s Interest in Thorne

Baylor’s pursuit of Thorne made sense from a football standpoint. The Bears struggled with quarterback consistency last season, and head coach Dave Aranda was clearly looking for an experienced signal-caller to elevate the team. Thorne, a veteran with starting experience at both Michigan State and Auburn, fit the bill perfectly. His leadership, poise, and ability to manage a game were exactly what Baylor needed to contend in the Big 12.

Sources close to the situation suggest that Baylor’s NIL collective made a record-breaking offer, surpassing any previous bid in program history. The financial incentive alone would have made him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in college football. Yet, despite the historic offer, Thorne opted to stay put.

    Why Did Thorne Say No?

Several factors likely played into Thorne’s decision to reject Baylor’s bid:

    1. Loyalty to Auburn and Unfinished Business

Thorne has emphasized his commitment to Auburn, and after a challenging 2024 season, he may feel there’s unfinished business. With another year in Hugh Freeze’s system, he likely believes he can improve his play, boost his NFL draft stock, and help Auburn compete in the loaded SEC.

    2. Scheme and Fit Concerns

While Baylor runs a competitive system in the Big 12, it may not have been the ideal fit for Thorne. Auburn’s offense, particularly under Freeze, is designed to develop quarterbacks who can transition into the pros. Leaving for a new system at Baylor would have required another learning curve, something Thorne may not have wanted in his final college season.

    3. SEC Competition vs. Big 12

Playing in the SEC provides a bigger stage and stronger competition, which could be more beneficial for Thorne’s long-term aspirations. If he can prove himself against elite SEC defenses, his stock as a quarterback rises significantly more than if he dominated in the Big 12.

    4. Team Chemistry and Comfort Level

Sometimes, it’s not just about the money. Thorne has built relationships with his Auburn teammates and coaches, and disrupting that chemistry for a financial deal—no matter how big—might not have been worth it to him.

    What’s Next for Baylor?

With Thorne turning down their offer, Baylor will have to pivot to other quarterback options, either in the transfer portal or by developing their current talent. The Bears clearly wanted a veteran presence under center, and missing out on Thorne means they might have to scramble to find another capable leader.

    What’s Next for Thorne?

By staying at Auburn, Thorne has put himself in position to lead the Tigers for another season. With another year to grow in Freeze’s offense, he’ll have the chance to prove why he was such a sought-after quarterback in the first place. And if things go right, he could still play his way into a future at the professional level.

While Baylor’s secret bid made headlines, Thorne’s decision shows that, for some players, it’s not always about the money—it’s about the right opportunity.
