After a poor run of form that saw Newcastle United with one win in the last 8 games across all competitions, The Magpies finally taste victory over rivals Sunderland in the Tyne – Wear Derby after a 3-0 win against Sunderland.
With a decisive win in the first Tyne Wear derby since 2016, Eddie Howe eased any pressure that might have been on him before of Saturday’s match.
Before the half, Daniel Ballard gave the visitors the lead by putting the ball in his own net while Alexander Isak was applying pressure. Howe’s team quickly used their advantage following the half, having mostly failed to take chances in the opening forty-five minutes.
Less than a minute into the second half, Miguel Almiron spotted Pierre Ekwah dallying on the ball and dispossessed the Frenchman, setting up Alexander Isak to increase the Magpies lead.
The home team persisted in trying to score even though Newcastle maintained most of the upper hand in the second half. Martin Dubravka had to make several saves, including one excellent one against Alex Pritchard.
