Dallas Cowboys wisely selected Dak Prescott 135th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He’s since become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and is coming off a season in which the Cowboys had the highest-scoring offense in the league.
While Prescott hasn’t had the playoff success that Jerry Jones and Cowboys fans dream of, several teams would be thrilled to have a quarterback who can perform like the 3x Pro Bowl QB has. As Prescott, 30, prepares to enter his ninth NFL season, one would think his future in Dallas is set in stone, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
For now, Prescott is set to enter the final year of his contract in 2024, meaning he could be setting himself up to hit the open market, just like Kirk Cousins has. As we saw, the Falcons made Cousins a godfather offer he couldn’t refuse, despite his loyalty to Minnesota. What would happen if Prescott faced a similar situation?
Typically, teams with franchise quarterbacks don’t let them hit the open market. But the Cowboys could be poised to go against the grain.
As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, the Cowboys seem willing to let Prescott test free agency in 2025. Of course, all it takes is the Cowboys negotiating an extension with their starting QB to make all these doubts go away. Yet, the longer the question lingers, the more doubt creeps in
