    Deal completed: Celtics get a four-year, $80 million extension…

The Boston Celtics and Jrue Holiday are on a fast track to securing a long-term contract extension before his looming NBA free agency, and both parties are eager to finalize the agreement as quickly as possible.

The negotiation timeline between the Celtics and Holiday is set to intensify starting April 1, a strategic wait due to NBA rules that limit extension possibilities within a player’s first six months following a trade. Both sides have an interest in completing a deal.

“He is eligible on April 1 to, he’s already eligible now but he, this sounds funky, he gets more eligible April 1. There’s fewer limits on what he can sign April 1. And I do think that there’s interest on both sides to get something done sooner rather than later. Whether they do or not I don’t know,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on The Hoop Collective.

Holiday’s tenure with the Celtics officially began on October 1, and he’s been vocal about his eagerness to secure a future with the Celtics.

I think everybody kind of knows we’re set and we’re set for a long period,” Holiday told MassLive. “No matter what happens, you are going to come back here with the same guys for the most part. Things happen but I think you lock into that, being able to have that comfortability and just kind of that pressure off of you about what’s next.”

Holiday has averaged 12.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists in his first season with the Celtics. Holiday’s defensive impact remains an integral element of the team’s success, reducing the burden of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kristaps Porzingis to make plays offensively. However, Holiday’s efficiency has been impressive in his role as a complementary option, shooting 48.5% from the floor and 44.5% from beyond the arc.

With the Celtics’ primary players already under contract for the upcoming season, extending Holiday’s contract for an additional one or two years aligns with the team’s strategy despite the potential for significant luxury tax implications.
