The Dallas Cowboys have lost some significant pieces of their pass rush game to free agency as Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler have both joined former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn in Washington.
Bleacher Report sees a potential “splash” deal that would bring in someone to replace some of that defensive production lost. B/R proposes sending this year’s fifth-round draft pick, No. 174 overall, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka
This makes sense for a couple of reasons per Bleacher Report, as Tryon-Shoyinka comes at a budget price.
“As it happens, the Cowboys have a big need on the edge and Tryon comes with an affordable $2.2 million salary,” writes B/R. “With Dorance Amstrong and Dante Fowler Jr. leaving, the Cowboys with 716 snaps to replace.”
The other reason this could make sense for Dallas, per B/R, is the cost of acquiring Tryon-Shoyinka.
“They can find another edge defender in the draft, but it’s going to be hard to find one ready to contribute with the fifth-round pick they’d be sending to Tampa,” B/R wrote. “They can go to free agency but there aren’t many 24 year old with the potential to find a new level of production on the market.”
For Tampa Bay, it could present an opportunity to get something in return for a player that frequently got lost on the depth chart last season while gaining a draft pick.
The Cowboys‘ options are fairly limited due to salary cap issues, but what they do have is draft stock. And a move like this to replace two productive players might be the answer to at least some lost defensive production.
