Former Tennessee football defensive lineman Tyler Baron is on the move again. Baron transferred out of the Tennessee football program in December, which came as a surprise to some. It was expected he and James Pearce Jr. would be the Vols’ edge rushers in 2024, but he had different plans.
The former Vol has notoriously transferred to three schools since December, with the University of Miami being his most recent stop. Before committing to Miami, he committed to Ole Miss out of Tennessee before officially transferring to Louisville for the spring. Louisville seemed to be just a placeholder for Baron to go through spring workouts because after the Cardinals’ spring season ended, Baron jumped back in the portal and decided to stay within the ACC by joining Miami. Baron was one of eight Vols to transfer out of the program in December, with one more transferring out this spring. Josh Heupel responded by bringing in eight transfers to match the outgoing players to improve the defensive secondary and front seven. His transfer to Miami makes Baron’s fourth school in six months after spending the past four seasons on Rocky Top. Former Tennessee defensive backs Wesley Walker and Tamarion McDonald joined Baron at Louisville for the spring, but Walker has also moved on, committing to Michigan.
Baron is the No. 72 overall player and the No. 10 EDGE rusher in 247 Sports’ Transfer Portal rankings. In his time at Tennessee, Baron totaled 101 tackles, 27.0 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks in 46 games. He will now spend his fifth year of eligibility in Miami with Mario Cristobal’s squad. Miami is entering year three of the Cristobal era and will look to have back-to-back winning seasons after finishing 7-6 last season. Baron and the Hurricanes will open the 2024 season against a familiar foe, with Florida scheduled for Week One.
