Texas A&M “made a very furious run” at Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello in its search for a new coach, but he stayed “loyal” to the Vols after leading them to their first national championship, according to a report Sunday from D1Baseball.com’s Kendall Rogers. After the Aggies’ pursuit of Vitello, Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle reported Sunday morning that they now plan to hire hitting coach Michael Earley as their new head coach.
Rogers wrote in a post on his X account that Texas A&M “shot its shot, but (Vitello) stayed put and loyal to a program that has given him the keys to the castle.” Vitello has led Tennessee to three Men’s College World Series appearances in the past four years, and the Vols won their first national title Monday night in Omaha, Neb., by holding off the Aggies for a 6-5 victory in Game 3 of the MCWS finals.
