Why the Tennessee Volunteers are better than everyone thinks they are

As we approach the 2024-25 college football season, the Tennessee Volunteers are widely considered to be a middle-of-the-pack SEC team with a very low chance of making the College Football Playoffs.

However, with the way their roster is set up, led by the dark-horse Heisman candidate Nico Iamaleava, they not only should be one of the best teams in the SEC but one of the best in the entire nation.

Apart from Iamaleavea, this team has a blend of returning talent, promising newcomers, and a coaching staff that has proven its mettle. Tennessee is ready to ascend to the top of the CFB rankings. Here’s an in-depth look at why the Volunteers are better than everyone thinks they are this upcoming season.

Former five-star recruit Nico Iamaleava is set to lead the offense after getting the starting job during the Citrus Bowl last season. Nico, who has worked extensively on his mechanics and decision-making, now enters his sophomore year with a refined skill set. His arm strength is elite, but it’s his improved accuracy and poise under pressure that will make the difference.

Second-year offensive coordinator Joey Halzle, who was promoted from within, brings continuity and innovation. Halzle’s familiarity with the system ensures a seamless transition, and his fresh ideas will keep defenses guessing. Expect an uptick in RPO (run-pass option) plays and more involvement of the tight ends, adding layers to an already dynamic offense.

The receiving corps, led by Squirrel White, looks as strong as ever. White, who had 803 receiving yards and two touchdowns last season, is set for a breakout year as he prepares for his future past college.

A key addition is freshman sensation Mike Matthews, a five-star recruit who chose Tennessee over several other top programs. Matthews brings speed, agility, and exceptional route-running skills. His presence will draw attention from opposing defenses, creating more opportunities for White and the rest of the receiving unit.

The Volunteers will also make upgrades on the defensive side of the ball. The defensive line, anchored by potential future top-five draft pick James Pearce Jr., will be a force to reckon with. Pearce Jr.’s pass-rushing abilities, combined with his improved run defense, make him a key player. Last season, he recorded 9.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, and he’s expected to elevate his game further.

Head coach Josh Heupel enters his fourth season with a clear vision and a proven track record. Heupel’s offensive schemes have consistently ranked among the top in the nation, and his ability to develop talent is unquestionable. His focus on tempo and unpredictability will keep opponents on their toes.

Heupel’s strategic acumen is complemented by defensive coordinator Tim Banks, whose aggressive style has paid dividends. Banks’ focus on creating turnovers and applying pressure has transformed Tennessee’s defense into a formidable unit. This synergy between the offensive and defensive philosophies sets Tennessee apart.
