Boston, MA – September 2, 2024
In a stunning move, American sprinter Gabby Thomas announced she’s taking a break from track and field to focus on her education. Thomas, a 200m specialist, cited burnout and a desire to prioritize her studies.
“I need to recharge,” Thomas said. “My body and mind need a break.” Thomas’s decision raises questions about her Olympic future. “I’m not ruling out Paris 2024,” Thomas said. “But for now, I need to prioritize myself.”
Thomas’s coach, Randall Miyazaki, expressed support. “Gabby’s well-being is paramount,” Miyazaki said. “We’ll welcome her back when she’s ready.” Thomas plans to enroll in graduate school, pursuing a degree in sports management.
Thomas’s Statement:
“I appreciate the support from my fans, family, and coaches. This decision wasn’t easy, but it’s necessary for my growth. I’ll return to the track when I’m ready.
