At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Gabby Thomas crossed the finish line in 21.87 seconds in the 200m. However, she turned things around this time. On the now iconic purple tracks of Stade de France, the 27-year-old surprised the track and field community by emerging as the Olympic 200m champion. But this wasn’t the only gold she snagged. The sprinter proved her mettle in the 4x100m and 4x400m relay too. It’s safe to say that her second Summer Games berth was a resounding success.
While she gets to hold on to that title for the next 4 years, it will be interesting to see if she can replicate that magic again at the 2025 World Athletics Championships. In an October 20 episode of the Ready Set Go podcast, Justin Gatlin and Rodney Green pull the curtains back on how things could possibly turn out. One of the many things fans missed out on at the Summer Games was the infamous USA vs Jamaica rivalry. Crème de la crème like Shericka Jackson, Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce were missing from the track.
But we might likely see Gabby Thompson lock heads with the incredible trio at the World Championships next year. “Shericka is very impressive to me man, like just like once you over her resume from 100m to 200m and the 400m, like Shelly-Ann and Elaine. Their resume is impeccable for the 100m and the 200m,” Green admitted. Thompson-Herah had snagged gold in Rio and Tokyo for the 100m and 200m. However, the Olympian suffered an Achilles tendon injury during the NYC Grand Prix and had to bow out from Paris.
