BATON ROUGE — Backup LSU footballquarterback Rickie Collins plans to enter the transfer portal.
News of Collins’ intention to leave the LSU program was first reported by On3 Sports Sunday afternoon.
The transfer portal window doesn’t officially open until Dec. 9. But, when it does, Collins will be one of the first LSU players to enter their name into the portal.
Collins was a former four-star prospect coming out of Woodlawn High School located in Baton Rouge and was the 18th best quarterback in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Why did Rickie Collins enter the transfer portal?
Coming into the 2024 season, Collins was in a contested position battle with former Vanderbilt transfer A.J. Swann for the primary backup role behind starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.
It was apparent the last couple of weeks that Collins slipped to third string. During LSU’s loss at Florida when Nussmeier has to briefly come out of the game and the team’s win over Oklahoma in the second quarter of the regular season finale, it was Swann who spelled Nussmeier when he briefly exited the game with an injury.
Collins was third-string during the 2023 season being eventual Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels and Nussmeier behind him.
It appears that his path to the field at LSU was slimming. Collins will wrap up his career at LSU with 38 passing yards and 37 rushing yards over two seasons.
