The Toronto Blue Jays tried to land Juan Soto to pair with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. After missing on Soto they have turned their attention to extending Guerrero. However, as the sides are not close, he has given them a deadline to negotiate.
The Blue Jays will do everything they can to keep their star player in Toronto. However, during an appearance on Abriendo Sports, Guerrero noted that the two sides are not close in terms of contract offers.
What they offered me is not even close to what I’m looking for,” said Guerrero in Spanish.
Guerrero also noted, in Spanish, that he is willing to negotiate with the Blue Jays until the first full day of spring training. If a deal is not reached by then, the Blue Jays will have to wait until the following winter. However, at that time Guerrero will be a free agent and the Blue Jays won’t be his only offer.
Spotrac projects Guerrero to sign a 12-year, $427 million deal on the open market. During the interview Guerrero also noted that the Blue Jays’ most recent offer was for a total of $340 million and the deal came after Soto signed his historic 15-year, $765 million deal. It’s unrealistic that Guerrero would sign a deal as big as Soto. However, he is a four-time All-Star, Gold Glover and a two-time Silver Slugger. Last season he slashed .323/.396/.544.
He is one of the best players in baseball and deserves to be paid like that. It is reasonable to think that he would sign a deal worth more than $400 million. The Blue Jays will have until spring training before other suitors start preparing offers for the next offseason.
