Dallas Stars Make Bold Moves Acquiring Granlund And Ceci
The Stars boost their roster with key acquisitions just before the NHL trade deadline, enhancing their playoff potential.
The Stars sent their 2025 first-round pick along with a conditional fourth-round pick to the Sharks for Granlund and Ceci. The conditional aspect of the trade allows the fourth-round pick to become a third-round pick if Dallas reaches the Stanley Cup Final. The trade signals the Stars’ ambitions as they prepare for the playoff push.
General Manager Jim Nill expressed enthusiasm about the new players saying, “We are excited to welcome both Mikael and Cody to Dallas. We see both players as addressing immediate needs for our team. Mikael is a proven scorer who will bolster our forward group at both even strength and on the power play, and Cody will add a stabilizing and physical presence to our blueline.” The praise highlights Granlund’s scoring ability and Ceci’s defensive strengths.
Granlund, 32, is considered one of the top talents available during this trading season. After playing 52 games with the Sharks, he has recorded 15 goals and boasts 45 points – making him of significant interest to teams needing offensive support. His performance has been recognized internationally as well, securing him a spot on Team Finland for the 4 Nations Face-Off, where his experience could be beneficial.
This trade also sees Ceci, 31, moving to Dallas. He has amassed 15 points this season across 54 games, providing dependable depth on the defensive line, which has faced challenges recently due to injuries. His arrival occurs as the Stars deal with injuries to both Tyler Seguin and Nils Lundkvist, who have recently been placed on long-term injured reserve.
The Sharks’ side of the deal is strategic as well. Following this trade, they find themselves sitting on eight total draft picks for the upcoming draft, including two first-round selections. This acquisition of picks from teams signals San Jose’s rebuilding phase as they stockpile potential talents for future seasons.
