The second wave of Florida State footballdefensive transfers participated in their newcomer interviews on Thursday, with JUCO defensive lineman Tyeland Coleman, Western Kentucky transfer defensive end Deante McCray and North Carolina Tar Heels transfer linebacker Caleb LaVallee all getting the chance to introduce themselves for the first time.
Each player fits the athletic, versatile style that new defensive coordinator Tony White seeks, but they must prepare for a rise in competition and consistency.
LaVallee began the day by mentioning his relationship with defensive coordinator Tony White.
“He offered me when he was at Syracuse, he’s been great, and super cool to talk to. I love the defense that he runs. It is very enticing for a guy like me who likes to play fast and physically.”
He also went into his strengths and how he expects to affect the game.
“I am athletic, I can play in space, cover. I’m not a linebacker that has to come off the field on third down. That’s something that’s comfortable for me.”
Western Kentucky transfer Deante McCray took over and began with growing up in Jacksonville and his connection with Florida State growing up.
“Being a Florida kid, it is a blessing to be a Seminole…I know it was a tough season last year, but I want to be part of the rebuild and help fix that.”
McCray also touched on his willingness to stop the run and be effective at it.
“If you can’t stop the run, you can’t rush the passer. You have to earn the right to rush the passer. It’s definitely something that I take pride in. Stopping the run is on the defensive line first.”
Tyeland Coleman rounded out the day by discussing his experience playing in JUCO and how FSU came on his radar.
“In JUCO when I first got there, I wasn’t very good, I was just a big body. In JUCO, I improved against the run and the pass, and that’s only going to keep getting better here.”
He finished by reflecting on Tony White’s scheme and who helped him adjust to Florida State.
“Run and go. We’re just going to change the line of scrimmage and be physical…Jaden Jones has helped me a lot. He was my player host when I got here.”
