Former Texas Longhorn speedster Xavier Worthy ready for the big stage in Super Bowl 56
After breaking the NFL combine 40-yard dash record with an astounding 4.21 second run, former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Xavier Worthy got a few congratulatory texts. But one stood out, the one from Super Bowl champion QB Patrick Mahomes.
The Kansas City Chiefs are the team Worthy desperately wanted to get drafted by. “In a perfect world, I definitely would want to go to the Chiefs,” Worthy said. “Just the way Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs improvise and use you. They had Tyreek Hill. The way they used him, I feel like that would be a perfect fit for me.”
Worthy’s wish came true the night of the 2024 NFL Draft when the Chiefs took the speedster with the 28th pick. Now, the Texas Ex is part of the Chiefs’ historic quest for a three-peat. “This is stuff you can’t imagine,” the Chiefs rookie wide receiver said. “Getting drafted here was one thing. Coming back-to-back-to-back Super Bowls is another.”
Worthy had a very solid rookie season in KC with 59 receptions, 638 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He ranked sixth in receptions and seventh in receiving yards among all NFL rookie receivers. But he has really stepped it up in the playoffs and has become a key part of the high-power KC offense.
Xavier has done a great job this year of getting better every week. Whether it’s his route running, whether it’s getting on the same page as Patrick (Mahomes). He’s worked very hard at that part of his game,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “It’s paid off later in the season here. He’s not a big guy. To be able to persevere through 17 games, plus some playoff games, is a tribute to him and his conditioning.”
Worthy had a career-high eight catches for 79 yards in Kansas City’s Christmas Day win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the AFC championship game, Worthy produced a game-high six catches for a new career-best 85 receiving yards. Worthy leads KC in playoff catches with 11 and targets with 13. Worthy and TE Travis Kelce are the Chiefs’ only two players with over 100 receiving yards in the postseason.
