Ex-F1 Strategist Explains Why Carlos Sainz or Sebastian Vettel Struggled With Strategies at Ferrari. Ferrari stand out as one of the most iconic and decorated teams in the entire history of Formula 1.
- Red Bull. Seems like Horner is not opposing Sainz going back to the team. But that could have some issues. If Verstappen stays and Sainz is able to challenge him in speed, it will create a very bad atmosphere inside the team. And seeing how the Verstappens don’t want that (they want the full attention and benefits of the team), it would seem unwise to bring Sainz there. Only if Verstappen leaves to Mercedes it would be a logical idea. We know Sainz is not a very good team player and has difficulties accepting a number 2 role.
- Mercedes. This looks more likely. However, it could have a headache for the future. if Antonelli is the diamond he is thought to be, having Sainz in the team will block his way. Sainz wants long term commitment in a top team. That is the only reason why he is not at Ferrari for 2025. Having Sainz there for 2 or more seasons is not logical. But if Antonelli is not an option for the next 2 or 3 years, then Sainz could be a decent fill in driver.
- Aston Martin. This will depend on Alonso. If Alonso leaves the team, chances are either Perez or Sainz will fill in. Stroll will not leave the seat unless he wants to leave. If Alonso moves to Mercedes or Red Bull (or retires), then chances are Sainz will end up in Aston Martin. If Alonso does not move, then Aston Martin will not be an option
- Audi. This idea could be an attractive one. 2025 would be kind of wasted in terms or results, but it would be a year spent fully focused on 2026. He would be able to give the feedback he needs for the car in 2026, what to be done and what not to be done, and so on. He would be considered the lead driver, so the team would be built around him with either Zhou or Porchaire next to him. Some might think Audi is a risk. But consider Audi has way more experience with hybrid engines than any other team. They won the Le Mans several times with the e-tron car (which had similar performance with an F1 car). And Sauber has one of the best wind tunnels in F1. So it could be one of the best options for the future.
Sainz will consider Audi the last option, as what he wants is results immediately. But for that, he will have to wait at least until summer break, and keep proving that he can do it. Looks like the car suits his driving style better that Leclerc’s so he has an advantage in selling himself for the next 12 races…
