Oklahoma Sooners HC Brent Venables has had a tough tenure so far in Norman, Okla. Recently, on “The Paul Finebaum Show,” Finebaum claimed that if “OU” keeps on performing poorly, Venables’ coaching career can sadly come to an end for the Sooners.
Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners’ Uncertain Path Ahead
“He needs a big season because he’s had two bad seasons out of three,” Finebaum said. “I wouldn’t press my luck with another one.” Is the Oklahoma coach’s job in danger? Let’s take a look.
Venables began coaching Oklahoma in 2021. Since then, the team has recorded two losing seasons.
While Venables led his team to a 10-3 mark in 2023, this past season was a disappointment to fans. The Sooners ended the season at 6-7, the same record as Venables’ first season.
Now, “OU” fans are beginning to question Venables’ hire. Even if Oklahoma did remove Venables, they would be obliged to pay him a large buyout amount of around $44.8 million.
Still, it hasn’t all been bad in Norman. Since taking over, Venables’ defense has significantly improved. However, their struggles on offense remain.

It is unsure whether Oklahoma will replace Venables and start anew. For now, though, Venables will lead the team. The Sooners will kick off their 2025 season against FCS foe Illinois State.
