Florida State football has a long history, but recent years have been a mix of struggles and a return to success. They have had some success, but ultimately have not been able to really sustain the success we are used to seeing from such a historic program.
In 2018, Willie Taggart became head coach after Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M. Taggart’s time was tough, with FSU finishing 5–7 in his first season and starting 4–5 in 2019. He was fired before the end of 2019 due to poor performance, leaving the program in need of rebuilding.
In 2020, FSU hired Mike Norvell from Memphis. His first season was challenging, with the team going 3–6 in a COVID-shortened year. The 2021 season improved slightly to 5–7, but fans were still waiting for a turnaround. The 2022 season marked a big step forward. FSU finished 10–3, its best record since 2016, and beat Oklahomain the Cheez-It Bowl. This gave fans hope that Norvell was on the right track.
