Dominic Smith, a former infielder for the Boston Red Sox, recently exercised his opt-out clause from a minor league contract with the New York Yankees after a productive spring training. During his time with the Yankees, Smith posted a .297 batting average, complemented by an .857 OPS over 37 at-bats. Â
Smith’s tenure with the Red Sox began in May 2024, following his opt-out from a minor league deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. He signed a major league contract with Boston, stepping in as a first baseman after Triston Casas suffered a rib fracture. In his 83 games with the Red Sox, Smith recorded a .237/.317/.390 slash line, hitting six home runs and driving in 34 runs. Upon Casas’s return from the injured list in August 2024, Smith was designated for assignment and subsequently released. Â
Following his release from the Yankees, reports indicate that the Red Sox are considering a reunion with Smith to bolster their infield depth behind Casas. Given Smith’s familiarity with the organization and his left-handed bat, he could provide valuable depth at first base for Boston.
