Nebraska football roster slammed again by former Huskers lineman
There’s an old saying around the Nebraska football program. When I say old, it seems to be about as old as I am. “Once a Husker, always a Husker.” Some fans might claim that saying no longer applies because of NIL and the transfer portal. More than ever, players cycle through Lincoln and leave before the fanbase really gets to know them.
I however, have always felt as though anyone who puts on the pads for Nebraska gets to be considered a Husker for life, assuming they want that honor. Former Cornhuskers defensive lineman James Williams doesn’t really seem to want that honor. For the second time since he transferred from NU to Florida State, he’s made some comments that can only be described as less complimentary, maybe even disrespectful to his former teammates.
Earlier this winter, Williams said that the talent that Florida State had, especially at linebacker and defensive backs was better than what Nebraska football had. Last week, he essentially repeated those words. “I’d say it’s pretty accurate,” Williams said while speaking on the Jeff Cameron Show . “That’s no disrespect to my boys from Nebraska. I just think some of the guys we have down here are built different. Again, literally no disrespect.”
The words he wanted to “make sure” didn’t convey disrespect was that he’d moved to a team that had “upgraded” the talent on the roster. It’s hard not to hear a level of disrespect in those comments.
He then talked specifically about one former teammate Ty Robinson, while claiming he wasn’t trying to offer disrespect. “Darrell Jackson makes him look small. Again, no disrespect to Ty. He’ll be a dog in the league. He’ll be great. Darrell Jackson makes him look small.”
It’s worth pointing out at this point that Williams isn’t wrong here. Robinson and Jackson both stand 6-foot-5 but the former Husker weighs in around 288 now. Jackson is said to weigh about 330. So Robinson is a good 42 pounds smaller if those measurements can be believed.
It still won’t sit right with some Nebraska football fans that James Williams is talking the level of trash he seemingly is about his former teammates. He is likely simply very happy in his new home. He would be best served to not compare his new school to his old one. No matter how happy he is.
