Blake Shapen’s struggles have reached a boiling point for the Baylor Bears, and it’s impossible to ignore any longer. Once seen as the next great quarterback for Baylor, Shapen continues to regress with alarming speed. Saturday’s performance was another chapter in a season spiraling into disappointment, with Shapen missing wide-open receivers, holding onto the ball too long, and appearing completely out of sync with the offense. His reads were late, his throws lacked confidence, and the Bears’ once-potent attack looked neutered. Questions are swirling around whether the coaching staff is doing enough to develop Shapen—or if they’ve simply hitched their wagon to the wrong leader. The offensive line deserves some blame, but Shapen’s pocket presence has evaporated under even mild pressure. Defenses are feasting on his predictable tendencies, sitting on routes and baiting him into costly mistakes. Baylor fans expected growing pains, but not this. Not when so much talent is surrounding him. If Shapen can’t figure it out immediately, the Bears’ season could collapse completely before November. It’s gut-check time in Waco, and Shapen either needs to rise up—or Baylor needs to start planning for a future without him taking the snaps.
