Indiana Men’s Basketball Lands Transfer From National Champion Florida Gators
Indiana men’s basketball has landed a commitment from Florida Gators transfer forward Sam Alexis, per Joe Tipton of On3:
Alexis a native of Apopka, Florida, averaged 4.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 24 games last season for the Gators en route to their 2024-25 National Championship.
Alexis’ role in Todd Golden’s system was limited due to the Gators’ increasingly crowded front-court rotation, despite showing flashes of potential.
The 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward only spent one season at Florida and previously played at Chattanooga for two seasons. In 89 career games, Alexis averaged 7.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.2 blocked shots and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 52.5 percent from the field.
For the Chattanooga Mocs, Alexis was named third-team All-Southern Conference in the 2023-24 season and to the league’s all-defensive team. As a freshman in the 2022-23 season, he was named to the league’s All-freshman team.
Indiana clearly needs depth in their front court after the losses of Mackenzie Mgbako, Oumar Ballo, Dallas James, Malik Reneau and Bryson Tucker. They could possibly return senior Luke Goode next season but as of now the program has 2-3 frontcourt pieces in Reed Bailey and Trent Sisley. Tucker DeVries will likey play the three or four postion depending on how they round out the starting lineup.
Darian DeVries is known to play small ball with no starter over 6’8 last season, he like to play multiple guards and stretch the floor with small forwards but in the Big Ten Conference he needs to bolster the front court for rebounds and defense, Alexis will immediately fill that role for the Hoosiers.
Alexis, an incoming senior has one season of eligibility remaining.
Sam Alexis is the ninth transfer portal commitment for Indiana this off-season, joining Tucker DeVries, Conor Enright, Reed Bailey, Lamar Wilkerson, Jasai Miles, Tayton Conerway, Jason Drake and Nick Dorn.
