The wrestling world is reeling after reports confirmed that David Taylor, Olympic gold medalist and former Penn State wrestling icon, has died at age 34. Taylor, known as “The Magic Man” during his days under coach Cael Sanderson, helped usher in a new era of dominance for Penn State Wrestling. He was a two-time NCAA champion and won a gold medal in Tokyo in 2021, becoming one of the most decorated wrestlers in U.S. history. Details surrounding his death remain unclear, but USA Wrestling issued a heartfelt tribute, calling Taylor “a once-in-a-generation athlete and a champion in every sense of the word.” He was widely respected not just for his prowess on the mat, but for his humility and leadership off of it. Taylor had recently opened a wrestling academy aimed at mentoring young athletes. His passing leaves a massive void in the sport he helped elevate. Former teammates, including fellow Penn State great Bo Nickal, have shared emotional tributes. A memorial service is being planned at Rec Hall in State College, where fans are already leaving flowers and signs thanking Taylor for everything he gave to the sport and to Penn State.
