Red Sox legend wants team to prioritize this area to get back to winning
The Boston Red Sox, at 22-22, have some questions to address, but one team legend wants them to focus on one specific area.
“They need to work on defense which is why they missed going to the post season last year,” Pedro Martinez posted to X after Boston’s 11-inning loss to the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. “Prioritize defense over everything else! They have the tools to hit and pitch, now they need to make sure they’re better at playing defense.”
The bullpen failed to put Tuesday’s game away and blew three separate leads, but the defense has left much to be desired through the first 44 games of the season. The Red Sox are at the bottom of the league in fielding percentage (.976) and leads MLB in errors (38).
There is still plenty of baseball left to be played and time for the Red Sox to turn things around defensively. But at .500 going into Wednesday’s finale against Detroit, the Red Sox — though in second place in the American League East — can ill afford to lose more one-run games if they want to cause a gap between them and the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East standings.
