Even on a night where the scorecard didn’t reflect it, Tarik Skubal was electric. Facing off against the Red Sox, Detroit’s ace carved through the Boston lineup, racking up 15 strikeouts and earning his place alongside some of baseball’s greatest with a historic Cy Young-caliber streak. Though he gave up a few hits in key moments, the Tigers’ staff was left in awe of his control and velocity. “He’s filthy right now,” said Detroit pitching coach Chris Fetter. “That’s elite, Cy Young-level stuff.” Skubal’s fastball touched 98 mph consistently, and his slider sent batters fishing. It’s his third consecutive start with double-digit strikeouts, something no Tiger has done since Justin Verlander. With the Tigers still trying to find consistency in the AL Central, Skubal’s dominance is the anchor they desperately need. Fans at Comerica Park have started chanting his name with each punchout. “He’s HIM,” one fan posted after the game. Though the Tigers didn’t win this one, they’ve clearly got a frontline ace who’s ascending fast. If Detroit finds a rhythm, expect Skubal’s name to be in the thick of every awards conversation by October.
