Dallas’s Canadian bid revealed — From NFL aspirations to CFL attempt
The city of Dallas has been associated with the sport of football for generations now. What you might not know is that Dallas has a long and interesting history. From multiple name changes to the Canadian bid for the organization, the Cowboys(not their original name) have come along way. The Dallas Cowboys are arguably the most well known team in the NFL. They have a knack of keeping the organization in the headlines while still remaining competitive on the field. Its amazing to consider how far they have come.
From humble beginnings, to holding the aspirations of Texas in their hands.
The state of Texas loves football. We mean like really loves it. One might go so far as to compare it to religion in the lone star state. And back in 1959, a wealthy oil man named Chris Murchison was handed the keys to a brand new NFL team to be based in Dallas. Before that the team was known as the Dallas Texans but they performed so poorly that they left the city team-less after only one season.
After that Chris Murchison was awarded the team as part of the expansion in 1959. His original name for the team was not so inspired. The Dallas Steers was not a name that the city and its fans could get behind. After General Manager Tex Schramm rejected the name, Murchison’s next choice was the Dallas Rangers. He liked the name so much that he said, “it was a name for a football team if there ever was one”.
Unfortunately for him, and maybe fortunate for us, that name was already taken. The Dallas baseball team was called the Dallas Rangers. An ironic twist when we consider that after Murchison and Schramm settled on the Dallas Cowboys, the Rangers moved to Canada, making the name available for Murchison to use for his football team in Dallas. But by then, the Cowboys name and image had stuck.
What does the future hold in store for the iconic Dallas Cowboys organization?
Year after year the football world is surprised and shocked to what happens at the draft. It’s as if the whole league simultaneously remembers and forgets what the draft is capable of producing. But regardless of the pre-season drama and speculation, the Dallas Cowboys somehow always manage to stay ahead of the rest of the pack. We have no doubt that Jerry Jones has a little to do with that.
