Griffin McHone Named Director of Men’s Basketball Operations
University of Missouri men’s basketball announced the addition of Griffin McHone to the Tigers staff, joining as the program’s Director of Basketball Operations after helping both USF and Kennesaw State to their most successful runs in program history.
“We’re excited to welcome Griffin and his family to Mizzou as our new Director of Basketball Operations,” said Whitten Family Head Coach Dennis Gates. “Griffin is somebody who has quickly climbed the ranks in our sport, winning at each stop along the way. He brings a unique perspective to Mizzou, having worked a number of roles and with some of the top coaches in basketball. We look forward to him joining our program and continuing his pattern of success.”
McHone joins Mizzou after spending the previous two seasons at USF, serving as the program’s Director of Player Development in 2023-24 and its assistant coach in 2024-25. During his two years on campus, the Bulls captured their first regular-season title in school history when they won the American Athletic Conference with a 16-2 mark in 2024 – a nine-game improvement from the previous season before his arrival. USF also won a school-record 25 games and advanced to the second round of the NIT.
Prior to his time at USF, McHone spent four seasons at Kennesaw State as the team’s Director of Basketball Operations, serving on a staff that orchestrated one of the biggest turnarounds in the sport. He joined a program that had never posted a winning record in its Division I history and left with a school-record 26-9 mark in 2022-23. The Owls also won the regular-season and postseason Atlantic Sun titles, while earning its first bid to the NCAA Tournament.
“It is an incredible honor to join Coach Gates and his staff at the University of Missouri,” McHone said. “I’m excited to be part of a basketball program with a strong commitment to excellence and with a passionate and supportive fan base. Coach Gates is a tremendous leader and I’m looking forward to working alongside him and a staff that has a deep devotion for developing young men on and off the court. My family and I can’t wait to get to Mizzou and get to work.”
A 2017 graduate of Texas A&M, McHone also spent four years with the Aggies as a graduate assistant and student manager from 2015 to 2019. Overall, he has been a part of programs that have won three regular-season conference titles with three NCAA Tournament invitations, including twice advancing to the Sweet 16.
McHone and his wife, Lexie, have one daughter, Kennedy.
McHone joins a Mizzou program that has earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament in two of the last three years under the leadership of Gates. During the 2024-25 campaign, the Tigers posted three top-five wins for the first time since 1988-89, finishing sixth in a SEC that earned a record 14 bids to the NCAA Tournament.
