MERCER, Pa. (WKBN) — The former treasurer of a girls softball league in Mercer County received his sentence earlier this month for stealing from the league.

Brent Hanley, 55, was convicted of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received. The other charges in the case were dismissed, according to court records.

Court records state that Hanley was sentenced June 6 to two years of probation. As part of the terms of his probation, Hanley must pay costs and fines and avoid drugs and alcohol.

Hanley had been accused of stealing from the Mercer County Girls Fastpitch Softball League.

According to the criminal complaint, the league president contacted police in August 2023 saying that money was missing from the league account. Investigators found that between January 2017 and November 2023, $38,000 had been taken from the account and transferred via checks to Hanley’s personal account, according to the complaint.

Hanley became treasurer of the league in 2017, and the thefts began soon after.

The complaint alleged that Hanley presented accounting documents to the board with false information and balances to conceal his theft.

When questioned by investigators on Jan. 25, 2024, Hanley admitted to the theft saying that he had “fallen on hard times” but only admitted to taking $2,000. Investigators reviewed bank statements that showed a theft of $38,000, according to the complaint.

Hanley was removed from his position as treasurer in 2023.
