The Toronto Raptors have officially announced they are signing center Malik Williams to a 10-day contract. Williams spent the 2023-24 season with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA G League. In 33 games, Williams averaged 11.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.
Despite entering the NBA Draft in 2022, eventually going undrafted, this is Williams’ first contract with an NBA team. In 2023, Williams played for the Anwil Włocławek of the Polish Basketball League. The team went on to win the 2023 FIBA Europe Cup, becoming the first Polish club to win the title.
Earlier this year, Williams talked about what it meant to him to be a part of the FIBA Europe Cup championship team:
“Biggest positive was the on-the-court time, enjoying playing basketball in another country around people I never had an idea of and being able to create a bond with a group of guys who I only knew (for a short time),” Williams said of his time overseas. “After a day, I had to bond with them. The experience of winning the FIBA Euro Cup, having the gold medal put around my neck was really good. I enjoyed it.”

Why the Toronto Raptors Signed Malik Williams
With Jakob Poeltl sidelined and Jontay Porter under investigation by the league for allegations of a gambling scandal, the Raptors needed to add more center depth. Before the Williams signing, Kelly Olynyk was the only healthy center on the Raptors roster. The Raptors have used their final 10-day contract spot on multiple players recently. However, with Toronto’s current lack of depth at the center position, it makes sense to audition a guy like Williams and see what he can do. Additionally, Williams could be in line for an immediate opportunity to make an impact on the team.
On the court, the Louisville alum has good size at 6’11”. He is an athletic prowess with high energy. His biggest strength is likely his rebounding, although it will be interesting to see how he fares in the NBA. Furthermore, he is a solid defender and a decent offensive player.
What’s Next for the Raptors?
With just a couple of weeks left in the season, there’s not much Toronto can do besides stay healthy heading into the offseason. Currently, the Raptors have a 23-52 record and are on a 14-game losing streak. With just seven games remaining on the schedule, it will be worth watching to see if the Raptors can flip the switch before the season’s end.
