One of the Chicago Bears’ biggest questions heading into the offseason is Jaylon Johnson’s contract status. A crucial cog in the secondary and to-be unrestricted free agent, Johnson made a case to be considered elite. General manager Ryan Poles spoke on Johnson’s future with the Bears and insisted the 24-year-old will return.
Ryan Poles on Bringing Jaylon Johnson Back
Poles met with the Chicago media on Wednesday for his post-season press conference, which went about as expected. Amidst plenty of word salad tip-toeing around certain questions, Poles delivered one definitive sentence that should spark some optimism.
Johnson had a terrific 2023 season that resulted in his first Pro Bowl selection. The Utah product had a career-high four interceptions, including one pick-six, 10 passes defended, one forced fumble, and 36 tackles (31 solo).
The star cornerback delivered on the defensive side of the ball and the Bears are smart enough to recognize talent at that position, especially when the player is wearing No. 33.
With Poles vowing to bring back one of the most crucial parts of the secondary in Johnson, the future of the Bears’ defense is on the upswing. And the interest is mutual, as Johnson indicated Monday that he’s optimistic a deal will get done.
