After Sunday’s disappointing wild-card exit for the Dallas Cowboys, the status of Mike McCarthy’s job is continuously questioned. McCarthy has coached the Cowboys for three years, going 36-15 in the regular season and 1-3 in the postseason.
When talking on the Stephen A. Smith Show, Hall of Fame Dallas quarterback Troy Aikman was asked what he thought about McCarthy’s job status with six-time Super Bowl winning coach Bill Belichick available.
“I understand the Bill Belichick argument, and if there were a change it would seem like that’s the one that makes the most sense,” Aikman said. “I’ve heard some say, ‘Well could Jerry (Jones) work with Bill?’ My answer to that is he worked with Bill Parcells; he gave up a little bit, but I don’t think Jerry gave up as much as a lot of people would suggest.
“And I don’t know that he’d have to give up anything now because Bill Belichick is interested in two things: One he wants to set the (all-time wins by a head coach) record, and then two he wants to win a Super Bowl without Tom Brady as his quarterback. And in Dallas, he’d have the opportunity to do both of those things. It’s a team that’s built and ready to go all the way.”
Belichick parted ways with New England after 24 seasons. The only team he’s interviewed with so far is Atlanta.
On his show with Aikman, Stephen A. Smith acknowledged that it’s not necessarily McCarthy’s performance that will get him fired. Firing McCarthy is more about getting one of the greatest head coaches in NFL history.
“When Jason Garrett was fired, the logic or the rationale behind it was essentially what (Smith) just laid out,” Aikman said. “There’s an opportunity to bring in a guy like Mike McCarthy who had won a Super Bowl, had won a lot of games there in Green Bay. And so you bring in a coach with that kind of pedigree that can help get you over the top.”
With no reports indicating a decision has been made on McCarthy, any guess on the issue is speculation.
“Will a change be made? I personally don’t see that happening,” Aikman said. “And part of the answer … is because Jerry is 81 years old. And does he want to go through another regime, another set of coaches and all that goes with that? It’s not as simple or as clear cut, I think, as a lot of people might think.”
