Russell Wilson Move: Could QB Sign with Ravens Rival Steelers?
The timing might be right for the Steelers to have another Super Bowl champion under center.
The Ravens’ division rival Steelers appear to be in the market to upgrade at the quarterback position after inconsistent play there has plagued the team since the retirement of Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger after the 2021 season.
And the timing might be right to sign another Super Bowl champion to replace him.
The Broncos and Russell Wilson appear to be going through a very public and ugly breakup that might allow Wilson to find a new home for 2024 and beyond. And one of the teams that arrows are pointing to for the 12-year veteran to land is Pittsburgh.
During a recent episode of ESPN Get Up, former Colts coach Jeff Saturday offered his “best fit” for Wilson as the Steelers.
“Russell Wilson for Arthur Smith would be the best fit. He wants to play under center,” Saturday said. “He wants play-action. He’s a veteran quarterback, all the different things. I get the whole zone read thing, but Arthur Smith can create a run game no matter what he does.
As good as anybody… And you have a vet guy in there who’s won a bunch of games. I know people hate him; dude wins a bunch of freaking games.”
The Ravens lost to the Steelers twice this season, both times with identical 17-10 scores. The first time, in Week 5, Baltimore made numerous mistakes that allowed Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett to hit George Pickens for a 41-yard touchdown pass late in the game for the win. Pickett went 18-of-32 for 224 yards and one touchdown
In Week 18, the Ravens were resting most starters – including MVP candidate quarterback Lamar Jackson – for the playoffs. Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph got the start and completed 18-of-20 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown.
Both stat lines for the Steelers quarterbacks seem sufficient, yet Pittsburgh has dealt with inconsistent play under center all season. The Kenny Pickett experiment is leaning toward failure at this point as the hometown kid from Pitt has yet to show the consistency that the organization is looking for as the No. 20 overall pick in 2022.
