Aston Villa have made a £12.8m bid for Argentina World Cup winning defender Marcos Acuna. That’s according to Spanish news outlet Fichajes, who claim that Unai Emery is a big fan of the experienced Sevilla left back.
The 56-time international started his career in the Argentine second division with Ferro Carril Oeste before joining one of the nation’s biggest clubs in Racing Club in 2014.
Over the course of three years, he proved himself to be one of the best defenders in Argentina’s top-flight and went on to enjoy a trophy-laden season at Sporting Lisbon before joining Sevilla in 2020. Acuna has been an ever present in La Liga for the last four seasons – making the Team of the Year in 2021/22 and winning the Europa League a year later in 2022/23.
The 32-year-old has garnered experience in top European competitions and has also performed under pressure at the highest level with Argentina by playing a major role in the nation’s Copa America and World Cup triumph in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
These qualities are said to have made Acuna a priority target for Aston Villa as they take part in their first Champions League campaign in 41 years. Acuna will be in the last year of his contract next season and it is thought that Sevilla will be open to selling the defender rather than letting him go on a free, according to reports.
