Pittsburgh Steelers have been connected to several wide receivers throughout the offseason in an attempt to find a qualified and capable No. 2 boundary wideout.
The likes of Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, DK Metcalf, and Courtland Sutton have all been named as potential targets for Pittsburgh. But, with the NFL Draft having come and gone without a major deal for either of the 49ers’ big-name receivers, a trade yet to happen for Metcalf after June 1st, and Sutton saying he will be reporting to mandatory minicamp for the Broncos, it appears all of the Steelers’ options are running thin. So allow me to present a name that hasn’t been discussed a ton, if at all- Chris Godwin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Godwin caught 83 passes for 1,024 yards and two scores in 2023, but the Buccaneers now have four other quality receivers on the roster. Mike Evans is the leader of the pack in Tampa, but the Bucs also have Trey Palmer, who caught 39 passes as a rookie. They also drafted Jalen McMillan out of Washington in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and they just signed former New York Giants receiver Sterling Shepard. Plus, Godwin will be a free agent in 2025. If the Bucs already have four other capable names on the roster at his position, why not move him for a draft pick rather than lose him for nothing in free agency?
For the Steelers, the move makes sense for reasons we’ve discussed at length this offseason. They lack a capable starting boundary wideout not named George Pickens, and Godwin would immediately make them better as an offense.
