Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia staunchly defended his team’s roster despite their disappointing performance, claiming that 26 out of the 29 other NBA general managers would readily trade rosters with the Suns. However, this assertion was met with skepticism from across the league, given the Suns’ lackluster playoff showing and their financial constraints.

The Suns are burdened by the hefty salaries of three players: Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker, all of whom are on max contracts. Durant’s contract extends through 2026, while Beal is locked in until 2027 with a no-trade clause. Acquiring Durant and Beal required sacrificing future draft assets, severely limiting the Suns’ ability to make roster moves in the foreseeable future.

Adding to their financial woes, the Suns have substantial contracts with players like Jusuf Nurkic and Grayson Allen, further limiting their flexibility to improve the roster. Despite finishing the regular season with a respectable record and playoff seeding, the Suns were exposed in the postseason by a younger and more dynamic Timberwolves team.

While Ishbia attempted to paint a rosy picture of the Suns’ roster, it’s evident that the pieces don’t mesh well together. With three All-Star caliber players who thrive with the ball in their hands, the Suns lack a cohesive game plan. Additionally, the absence of a true point guard exacerbates their issues with ball distribution and team chemistry.

Bradley Beal notably struggled within this setup, experiencing a dip in his statistical output compared to previous seasons. His performance suffered, averaging fewer points and assists per game, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the Suns’ star-studded lineup.

Ultimately, Ishbia’s ambition to assemble a super team has faltered, highlighting the significant challenges facing the Suns. Despite his efforts to downplay the team’s issues, it’s clear that the Suns are grappling with substantial obstacles that will require strategic adjustments to overcome.
