Men’s 400-hurdle champion Rai Benjamin (Bronxville, New York/USATF New York) won the 24th USATF Athlete of the Week award for 2024 after clocking the sixth-fastest time ever by an American. This year, Benjamin had received recognition for the second time for his accomplishments.
Benjamin defeated 2022 world champion Alison dos Santos of Brazil and defending Olympic and world champion Karsten Warholm of Norway at the Monaco Diamond League competition, clocking a time of 46.67 to win. The 26-year-old Benjamin now has nine of the top ten positions and the sixth-best timings ever for an American.
Benjamin, who is unbeaten in three meets this season, won the Olympic Trials with a season-best time of 46.46. In all three events, Benjamin ran times under 47. With his victory at the Prefontaine Classic last year, he has now defeated Warholm and dos Santos twice in a succession.
