Canterbury have made a major move in the market after winning the race for Leo Thompson’s signature.
The New Zealand international informed Newcastle that he would not be renewing his contract with the Knights late last year. A hotly contested battle for him then followed with Canberra thought to have been leading contenders.

Canterbury have looked to be active in the market recently, with moves mooted for Ben Hunt and Ryan Papenhuyzen.
Yet despite failing to get these deals over the line for the marquee stars, the Dogs have finally landed a headline recruit in Thompson.
“The 24-year-old has built a reputation as one of rugby league’s most dynamic and consistent forwards, known for his explosive carries and defensive prowess,” the Dogs noted in a press release confirming the move from 2026 onwards.
Cameron Ciraldo has presided over a roster overhaul at Belmore, with the club earning their first finals appearance in eight years last season.
And the enforcer, who has played 64 games in the NRL to date, is the latest piece in the puzzle.
Thompson will provide a significant boost in the size and physicality stakes for a pack which has notoriously operated on the smaller side via the likes of Josh Curran and Kurt Mann.
He averaged 104 run metres per game in 2024, while starting in all 23 of his appearances.
The Kiwi star will join a forward rotation including Max King and Samuel Hughes with the Dogs looking to continue to climb up the ladder and become a premiership contender.
“Out of respect for Leo, the Newcastle Knights and their fans, the club will not be making any further comment until next off-season,” Canterbury concluded.
“We look forward to welcoming Leo and his family to the Bulldogs in 2026.”
