After calling the best offense in the country at LSU in 2023, Mike Denbrock is finding successwith Notre Dame in 2024.
Denbrock’s LSU unit led the country in points per game and yards per play. Led by Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Tigers were No. 1 nationally in yards per pass and yards per rush. It was historic stuff.
That made Denbrock a hot name on the coordinator market. Texas A&M took a swing, but Denbrock and LSU reached an extension. When Notre Dame came calling, it was a different story.
Denbrock, a Midwest native, opted to take the OC role with the Irish. Denbrock had a stint with Notre Dame before and couldn’t turn down a chance to return home.
Now, the Irish have a chance to reach the national title with a win over Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Thursday night.
Denbrock’s offense at Notre Dame looks different than the one he ran at LSU. The quarterback run game remains a central component, but Notre Dame lacks the downfield explosiveness LSU had with Daniels connecting to Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. Notre Dame ranks 92nd in yards per pass and 112th in 20+ yard passes.
That speaks to Denbrock’s ability as a coordinator. He’ll tailor his attack to fit his personnel and find a way to win.
The Irish rushing attack is among the best in the country, headlined by Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price. Notre Dame’s offensive line was a question mark entering the year and Denbrock found a way to make that work too.
Throw in Denbrock’s run to the playoff with Cincinnati in 2021 and it’s hard to find a coordinator on a better five-year run.
