15 years ago, Stephen Garcia’s play at South Carolina against Alabama turned him into a Gamecock legend. Now, his son Memphys is trying to write his own story as a quarterback.
On Wednesday, Memphys, a class of 2026 college football prospect from Lutz, Fla., shared on Twitter/X that he’s earned an Elite 11 Regional invite.
“He’s finally starting to turn his brain on and realize his potential,” Stephen told GamecockCentral. “It’s always hard being the parent because usually sons don’t listen that well. I didn’t really listen to my dad and still sometimes I don’t. But, I’ve been hard on him and I continue to be hard on him because of two reasons. The first, it’s because that’s what this freaking society needs. The second, is because I want him to be better than I was, on and off the field.”
As a junior, Memphys completed nearly 63 percent of his passes (130-for-207) for 1,426 yards and 11 touchdowns. Standing at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, he’s a rising senior at Steinbrenner High School (Lutz, Fla).
It’s not easy being a teenager of a split household, but he’s managed it very well, and I’m super proud of the man he’s becoming,” added Stephen. “Even though we butt heads sometimes, that’s just part of life. He just needs to continue to stay focused on the task at hand and continue to consistently get better every day. Consistency is paramount.”

The Elite 11 is considered one of the most prestigious high school quarterback competitions in the nation. According to Elite 11’s website, alumni include 28 of the 32 current NFL starting quarterbacks. 16 of the past 17 quarterbacks who have won the Heisman Trophy also took part in the event. In 2006, Stephen competed in the Elite 11 Finals.
“Crazy (that) my son is now trying to become part of this unique fraternity that is the Elite 11,” Stephen shared on social media on Wednesday. (It) was such an amazing experience back in 2006.”
