Texas’ Quinn Ewers reportedly turned down $8 million NIL….

Quinn Ewers‘ time with Texas was all-but-guaranteed to end after the Longhorns’ loss to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff semifinal earlier this month. Many were surprised by Ewers’ choice for the next chapter of his football career.

Texas’ Quinn Ewers reportedly turned down $8 million NIL offer

The former Longhorns quarterback opted to enter the NFL Draft, leaving behind a huge payday to enter the transfer portal.

Texas’ former signal caller announced Thursday his plan to enter the 2025 NFL draft, a move that will end his collegiate career after two years as the Longhorns’ starter. Ewers performed well enough at Texas to be a future NFL quarterback, and most projections paint him as anywhere from an end-of-first round pick to a (more likely) second or third rounder. The other option for Ewers? Transfer from Texas to another college program, receiving an NIL payday while burnishing his resume as an NFL prospect. Such a route reportedly came with a major possible payday, too.

The economics of Ewers’ decision don’t quite add up, especially considering he very likely would have cashed in with equivalent money in the 2026 NFL draft. So why eschew more college football in favor of the NFL? Ewers’ high-school coach at Southlake Carroll in Dallas provided a theory.

Texas was the only place [Ewers] wanted to play college football,” Southlake Carroll’s Riley Dodge told Brown.

Ewers never captured a national title in Austin, nor did he catapult his draft stock toward the top of the first round. I suspect the former Longhorns leader is still rather satisfied with his time on the 40 Acres, as he should be. Ewers posted a 21-5 record in two seasons with Texas. He leaves the program third all-time in passing yards and passing touchdowns, and he performed admirably in both College Football Playoff appearances. Ewers checked off plenty of career milestones in Austin. Now it’s time to challenge his skill at the next level.
