The days go by and the third baseman remains a free agent

s the Houston Astros look to renew Alex Bregman’s contract, another team is interested in the player’s services with an offer that could be too attractive for the player: the Detroit Tigers.

Bregman is looking for a multi-year contract and no less than $200 million dollars, and although the Astros are the first choice for the third baseman, they have been reluctant to offer the contract he is looking for, having already rejected an offer of $156 million.

The third baseman was part of the team that won two World Series in 2017 and 2022; in the 2024 season he batted .260, with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs, but a return with Houston looks distant for now.

Bregman’s age has been one of the questions

Alex Bregman is about to turn 31 in March, which is an element to take into account for the Houston team to have doubts about his performance in the following seasons.

Sports analyst Will Kunkel said, “The odds of the Astros signing Alex Bregman are low,” however, in previous weeks the odds were even “lower.”

Kunkel sees the growing stalemates between the Astros and Bregman, and his odds have dropped even further.

The Tigers’ offer to Bregman was a six-year contract and a similar amount to what the Astros had previously offered him. The deal, however, should be valued a little more so that Bregman feels satisfied with it and does not reject it as before.

Despite not having dazzling numbers, the player’s consistency makes him a great bet, as Detroit needs a third baseman, which would give a good boost to the lineup.

Since Alex Bregman rejected the Houston Astros’ six-year, $156 million offer, he no longer seems to be the club’s first choice.

Paredes, Bregman’s replacement with Houston

The rejection of this substantial offer indicates his aspirations for a better and longer-term offer, which diminishes the Astros’ chances of getting him back, unless they improve their offer, something that seems unlikely, after the team named Mexican Isaac Paredes as Bregman’s possible replacement.

Paredes comes off a regular season with a .238 batting average, 19 home runs and 80 RBIs with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs, and although the statistics seem to favor Bregman, Paredes’ hitting ability could prove useful for the Astros.
