North Carolina HC Hubert Davis puts massive sense of urgency on team

By Andrew Kulha  |  Last updated Feb 10, 2025 4:57 PM ET

It has been a rough stretch of games for the North Carolina Tar Heels, but head coach Hubert Davis feels his team may be trending in the right direction.

Considering the magnitude of that rivalry, it’s tough for any North Carolina team to come back from a loss to Duke, but the Tar Heels walked that tightrope with a 67-66 win over Pitt this past weekend.

RJ Davis hit a shot with 52 seconds left to give the Tar Heels the lead, and they held on to it despite Pitt getting several more shots to win the game.

It was a gritty win from UNC that the Tar Heels needed, and the sense of urgency they played with to get that win is what Hubert Davis wants to see from his team moving forward.

“I think you should play like that every day – every possession, whether it’s shootaround, practice, game. That’s what we talked (about),” Hubert Davis said after the win (h/t On3). “We always talk about it as a team. It’s not a sense of urgency but it’s a sense of emergency to make plays on both ends of the floor, whether it’s at the beginning in a game or at the end.”

Had the Tar Heels lost to Pitt, it absolutely would have been an emergency. It would have been their third straight loss and fifth in the last six games.

Instead, UNC was able to get off the losing side of things right in time for a clash with No. 23 Clemson.
