Oklahoma Sooners football program may be on the verge of losing one of their greatest recruiting tools
The Oklahoma Sooners have had a rollercoaster of an offseason in 2025. They have lost quite a few players to the transfer portal but gained some really good ones back. And then they have lost some important staff members on top of that, like their general manager Curtis Lofton, the assistant general manager Chuck Lillie also left along with the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator Zac Alley.
The, of course, they were not able to land Jim Knowles as their replacement defensive coordinator. So, yes, things have been up and down. But, as Brent Venables does, he has remained focused on keeping this program alive and well.
But, on Tuesday some news hit, which he likely knew about before it was reported, that may have really hit hard.
The Sooners have one of the best recruiting tools in college football when it comes to getting running backs. They have a former NFL running back who played for the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans, and Philadelphia Eagles during his seven-year career. That’s huge for high school kids who want to go pro, is learning from someone who did it at a very high level.
According to Pete Nakos of On3, the Oklahoma Sooners are in jeopardy of losing former Oklahoma Sooners running back turned running backs coach DeMarco Murray to Penn State for the same position.
Per George Stoia of Sooner Scoop, the Sooners gave Murray a $225 thousand pay raise last offseason due to Ohio State trying to grab him. Last season he made the most of any running backs coach in the country. So, for all we know, this could be another move as leverage for pay.
