Michigan extends coach Dusty May amid rumored Indiana interest

Dusty May isn’t going anywhere after a stellar Year 1 in Ann Arbor.

The Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team has had a massively successful first campaign under Dusty May, who was hired from Florida Atlantic last offseason. Now, he’s sticking around despite rumored interest from a Big Ten rival.

On Friday, Michigan and May agreed to a contract extension hours before the Wolverines hosted rival Michigan State with first place in the Big Ten on the line. The Spartans ultimately pulled off the upset win on the road with a 75-62 victory.

“I am grateful to (athletics director) Warde (Manuel), U-M President Santa Ono, and all the members of the Board of Regents for the trust and support they have given me as the head coach,” May said in a release. “My goal is to bring continued success to this historic program. We cannot reach that goal without the hard work that my staff and players put into this program. We have built a solid foundation; however, there is much more work to be done. I look forward to those challenges and what the future holds for me and my family in Ann Arbor.”

May, who took Florida Atlantic to the Final Four in 2023, was a rumored candidate for the Indiana job. The Hoosiers announced earlier this season that Mike Woodson will step down following the campaign.

Michigan is 20-6 and 12-3 in Big Ten play in May’s first season. The Wolverines are in line for a top-four seed in the NCAA tournament, and more importantly, they’re keeping their head coach around.
