Detroit Red Wings call up Sheldon Dries from the Griffins as Andrew Copp lands on IR; Michael Rasmussen’s status remains uncertain after head injury.
The Detroit Red Wings are making adjustments to their roster as injuries pile up. On Monday morning, the team called up forward Sheldon Dries from the Grand Rapids Griffins while placing Andrew Copp on injured reserve. This move comes after a rough weekend for Detroit, which saw two key forwards go down with injuries.
Copp suffered an injury during Saturday’s loss to the Minnesota Wild, and the following night, Michael Rasmussen took a hit to the head in an overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks. With Copp now on injured reserve, he is required to miss at least the next seven days, which means he’ll be out for three upcoming games, including Tuesday’s rematch against the Wild and the home-and-home series against Columbus, culminating in Saturday’s Stadium Series game.
Dries has been having a solid season with the Griffins, putting up 27 points in 48 games. However, even with both Copp and Rasmussen sidelined, he may not see much action right away. The Red Wings already reintegrated Tyler Motte into the lineup on Sunday, and they still have Christian Fischer available as an option. Dries’ call-up is likely a precautionary measure in case the injury situation worsens.
As for Rasmussen, there is still no timeline for his return. Head coach Todd McLellan didn’t sound optimistic after Sunday’s game, stating, “When a player gets a blow to the head and doesn’t return, it’s never a good sign.” More updates on his condition, as well as the team’s lineup plans, are expected later in the day when the Red Wings return to practice and McLellan addresses the media.
