Multiple Penn State wrestling signees succeeded in postseason action over the weekend. Minisink Valley senior PJ Duke won his fourth NYSPHSAA state title. He beat Casey Liess by technical fall, 24-8, in the 170-pound final.
“PJ’s accomplishment is truly amazing,” Minisink Valley athletic director Tim Bult told the school’s official website . “Only a handful of wrestlers win more than one state title during their high school wrestling careers, and for PJ to win four is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the sport. He is the number one wrestler nationwide and next year he’ll be wrestling at Penn State, the nation’s top, Division I wrestling school.”
Duke’s future classmate, Perrysburg, Ohio senior Marcus Blaze, won a district title Saturday as his run at 150 pounds — which is two weight classes higher than he usually competes at — continues. He made the move up to help his team qualify as many wrestlers as possible for the Ohio state tournament, and it worked, as it will send a full squad to it.
“When the kids did the lineup switch, the goal was to take at least 12 legitimate point scorers down to Columbus and we did that,” Perrysburg coach Scott Burnett told the Toledo Blade . “We’re just grateful and excited.”
Back in Pennsylvania, Sam Herring won the 139-pound title at the PIAA SW AA Regionals to punch his ticket to the state tournament. And, Dalton Perry and Asher Cunningham won the 145- and 172-pound titles, respectively, at the PIAA West AAA Regionals to qualify for the state tournament, as well.
