Javier Báez gets Surprise Start in Center as Tigers test Outfield Depth and He thinks He’s been used…

In a recent move to assess their outfield depth, the Detroit Tigers started shortstop Javier Báez in center field during a spring training game against the Atlanta Braves. This marked Báez’s first appearance in center field in nearly a decade, with his previous experience limited to a few games during the 2016 Puerto Rican Winter League and spring training with the Chicago Cubs. 

Báez, primarily known for his infield prowess, has shown willingness to adapt to different positions in the past. In 2016, he expressed openness to playing center field to enhance team flexibility, stating, “All I want to do is help.” 

The Tigers’ decision to test Báez in the outfield comes amid roster adjustments following the unexpected signing of Alex Bregman by the Boston Red Sox. This development left Detroit exploring various infield configurations, including considering Báez for third base. 

As of now, there is no public information indicating that Báez feels he is being “used” or has expressed dissatisfaction with these positional experiments. His past comments suggest a team-first mentality, embracing role changes to contribute wherever needed.
