The scheduling of the Big Ten Tournament and its quick turnaround into the NCAA Tournament has been a hot topic this week. Wisconsin played four games in as many days, while Michigan had three games in three days, leaving both teams visibly fatigued in the Big Ten Tournament Championship. When the NCAA bracket was revealed, Wisconsin learned they would play one of the earliest games on Thursday—just days after their grueling conference tournament run. Many fans viewed this as an unfavorable draw for a team that could have benefited from extra recovery time.

Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard initially acknowledged discussions with the Big Ten Conference regarding the tournament’s scheduling. He suggested that the final two teams should be awarded a Friday first-round matchup rather than a Thursday game. However, rather than dwelling on the perceived disadvantage, Gard has since shifted his perspective and found a positive outlook on the situation.

The Badgers are set to face the Montana Grizzlies on Thursday, March 20, at 12:30 PM CT. In his recent press conference, Gard emphasized the benefits of the quick turnaround, stating, “I think quick turn, go play. Don’t dwell on, ‘Hey, we got to the championship game, and we didn’t get it done.’ Now go on to the next, we get to play in another one.”His perspective highlights the opportunity to immediately refocus on the next challenge without lingering on past disappointments.

This mindset is a signature trait of Greg Gard, who is known for his no-excuses approach. While other coaches, such as Mick Cronin, have voiced concerns about travel schedules, Gard has maintained a simple philosophy: “Just tell us where to play, and we will play.” His positive attitude could be crucial in helping Wisconsin handle the tight turnaround. Rather than viewing the situation as a setback, Gard has framed it as an opportunity—an approach that could prove beneficial as the Badgers begin their NCAA Tournament journey.
