Darian DeVries was announced as Indiana’s new men’s basketball coach two weeks ago today.
As DeVries works to build his first Indiana basketball roster, his staff is also beginning to come into focus. The program is not expected to announce the staff until most pieces are in place.
Here’s what we know about staff addition and changes just a few weeks into the DeVries era:
Assistant coach – Nick Norton
According to the publicly available IU directory, Nick Norton, who worked under DeVries at West Virginia, is now a university employee.
Norton was with DeVries at the IHSAA state finals in Indianapolis on Saturday. At West Virginia, Norton served as an assistant coach and director of player development.
The Bloomington, Illinois native worked at Drake for three seasons under DeVries, first as the assistant director of operations and later as the director of operations before a promotion to assistant coach and director of player development.
Norton played at UAB from 2014 through 2018 and made 97 starts. He transferred to Drake for the 2018-19 season. He briefly played in the NBA G-League before injuries ended his career.
Ryan Horn – strength and conditioning
Horn is also listed as an IU employee in the university directory. He previously served as the assistant director of strength of conditioning for West Virginia.
The West Virginia native has also worked at Drake, Wichita State, Wake Forest, Tulsa and VCU.
In the 2023-24 season, Horn worked under DeVries at Drake as the assistant athletic director of sports performance. He oversaw sport performance programs, sport science and departmental initiatives for 16 sports.
Drew Adams – assistant coach
Adams, a Bloomington native with strong recruiting ties to the state, sat with DeVries at Saturday’s IHSAA state finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
According to a report on Monday from Bearcat Journal, Adams has joined the IU coaching staff. As of early Tuesday morning, he was not listed as an employee in the IU directory.
Adams, who graduated from Bloomington South, worked on Tom Crean’s staff at Indiana from 2009 through 2011.

Two former IU staff members said their goodbyes to the program on Monday.
An attorney for longtime trainer Tim Garl released a statement confirming his departure. Here’s the complete statement:
“Long time Athletic Trainer for Men’s Basketball at Indiana University, Tim Garl, was informed by Athletic Director ,Scott Dolson, that his contract will not be renewed for his 45th basketball season. Dolson informed Garl that he would like a “fresh start” for the IU Basketball Sports Medicine staff. His last day is Monday.
“Garl feels grateful for the incredible opportunities he has had during his career having served every head coach starting with Bob Knight. He finds it a blessing that a kid from Elkhart, IN could be fortunate enough to participate in both collegiate and international competitions. Tim’s enduring legacy includes being at every IU basketball game for 44 seasons.
